The importance of pH in skin health is often spoken about in hushed tones as if it’s some sort of secret code that only the beauty elite know. But pH is actually pretty simple: it’s a measure of how acidic or alkaline something is. And when it comes to your skin, pH plays a huge role in having clear, beautiful skin.
When your skin is at its optimal pH level, it’s able to produce enzymes that repair damage and keep things functioning smoothly. But when pH levels are off, those enzymes can’t do their job properly and skin starts to look dull, unhealthy, and aged. So if you’re wondering why your skin isn’t looking its best, pH might be the answer.
What is My Skin’s pH?
Maintaining a safe pH range for skin is important for its overall health. The skin pH range is naturally acidic. The typical skin pH level ranges from 4.5 – 5.4 and varies between people. The pH of the skin is influenced by many factors, including diet, stress, pollution, and weather.
A healthy pH balance helps to keep the skin moisturized, protects against environmental damage, and helps to prevent acne and other skin problems. When the skin is in range of its optimal pH, it triggers enzymatic activity and repair. I call this the Natural Healing Zone.
Unfortunately, many people have pH imbalances that can lead to dryness, redness, and other
skin problems.
What pH Level Should Skin Care Be? (Probably Lower Than What You’re Using)
Many skin care products – including some of your favorite luxury beauty brands – use ingredients with a pH corrosive to skin, with levels as high as 6.0 – 7.0. When products raise the pH of our skin, it can cause all sorts of problems like dryness, redness, irritation, and acne breakouts.
When the typical skin pH level is interrupted, your body can start to overproduce sebum – the oily substance that helps keep your skin moisturized. Too much sebum can lead to clogged pores and acne. Sebum can also speed up the process of aging by damaging collagen and elastin fibers.
pH-Balancing Skin Care Technology
My SMARTcore technology adjusts to the pH of the user. It maximizes skin hydration and nourishes its protective barrier all day long. It also improves the delivery of all your skin care by improving permeability of key ingredients.
EFFICACY TEST: SKIN HYDRATION %
Based on 15 individuals to compare SMARTCore™ technology vs control product. Readings were taken with Corneometer CM825 (CK electronics, Germany) at 30 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 12 hours and 24 hours.
dramatically increased skin hydration – even at the end of the day, while the Control went below base line and actually dried the skin, more so than if no product were used at all.
At the heart of SMARTcore are energized and structured H2O molecules linked with phospholipids triglycerides, ceramides, and cholesterol. These proteins mimic the skin’s protective lipid barrier without coating it or disrupting its natural pH.
Soap-free delivery SMARTcore is clinically proven to increase skin hydration compared to other products. (In fact, we found that the control product dried the skin out even more than if no product were used at all!)
