I work with women every day who will go to great lengths to look their best, but forget the most critical steps when it comes to their skin. Even with exercise, a healthy lifestyle and diet, your skin has its own needs. That’s why I’ve put together a simple routine for ageless skin that I know you are going to love:
1. Improve Your Lifestyle
Health threatening habits can be detrimental to skin. Smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages in excess, eating poorly, sunbathing – all speed up the aging process. Remember, just as your body is affected by what you eat or drink, so are your skin cells.
2. Eating Your Way Healthy
Healthy eating and weight management are major contributors to good health and younger looking skin. To fight the signs of aging, your body needs nutrients and vitamins to repair cell damage and build healthy new cells on a daily basis. Try eating balanced meals with an abundance of leafy green vegetables and fruits; and protein-rich foods, such as nuts or eggs.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
There are so many benefits to drinking water. Water brings life to all of your body – including your skin. As a matter of fact, water is probably the most readily available anti-aging product you can get your hands on! So, replace those sodas (and diet sodas) with a healthy dose of water.
If you’re like me, you may prefer something with a little flavor. Maybe put a few drops of lemon juice in your water. Or if you prefer fruit, eat cantaloupe or watermelon – they both are filled with flavor and plenty of water for hydration.
4. A Little Exercise
A little exercise goes a long way! Don’t worry about distance or speed. Simply walking just a little every day improves the flow of blood. The blood carries oxygen through your body, which is necessary for good overall health. In time, you can increase the distance a little bit each time.
I started grabbing the parking space farthest out when I go to the mall or even the grocery store. I even try using stairs, instead of the elevator, when I only need to go up one or two flights. Another idea is to take a long walk when you are on a cell phone talking to the family or a close friend – you will end up getting some exercise without even noticing the time!
5. Skin Care Routine
Your skin has special needs, so here is a simple 3-step routine you are going to love that will create that healthy, youthful glow.
Step 1: Cleanse and Exfoliate
Your skin is in a constant state of renewal. But as we age, this process slows down. Used up cells accumulate on the surface and the skin starts looking dull and lifeless. Cleansing and exfoliating on a regular basis speeds up cell renewal and creates more radiant skin.
One of my favorite products is a foaming cleanser combined with gentle exfoliating beads. This type of two-in-one cleanser removes make-up, dirt and other impurities – while gently exfoliating away dull, dead skin cells.
STEP 2: Hydrate
Dry skin is the ultimate enemy in the war against aging. Lack of moisture affects the skin’s pH, enzymatic activity and its natural function to replenish and heal itself. Lack of moisture also affects elasticity and firmness, and can make the skin age faster.
Use a moisturizer each morning and again at night. Whether oil-free, light weight or a heavier, rich cream – moisturizers do more than deliver water. A good moisturizer contains humectants that bind moisture to the skin and ingredients to nourish the newly revealed skin cells.
GREEN BEAUTY TIP:
Look for a moisturizer that does NOT contain a soap based emulsifier, such as Polysorbates, self-emulsifying ingredients and others. These types of moisturizers can actually dry out the skin during the course of the day.
STEP 3: Delicate Eye Area
The skin around the eyes is the biggest area of concern. And it’s the most delicate. Look for an eye cream that’s specifically formulated for the eye area. It should nourish and hydrate the skin, while helping to firm the skin by promoting collagen production.
SKIN CARE MYTH:
While collagen plays a key role in plumping up and firming the skin, the ironic part is the skin will not absorb collagen. Spending money on products containing collagen is a waste of money. Look for peptides or Vitamin C based products that actually stimulate the body to produce its own collagen. It can then go where it’s needed most.
If you are prone to puffy eyes or dark circles, consider using an eye gel in the morning. This can soothe tired eyes, deliver hydration and nourish the skin – without weighing it down. You can keep it next to your coffee and put it on while it brews. That way you never forget it! Then at night, use an eye cream formulated specifically for targeting wrinkles – it will replenish the eye area deeply, while you rest.
