Microneedling probably sounds terrifying. Even though the results are so fantastic that most of us would sit through the pain, anyway – microneedling is actually pretty painless.

Marisel Salazar joins Just Ask David once again to give us all the details on the newest skin care craze. This time, it’s all about microneedling.

Marisel is a New York City based lifestyle writer and photographer. She contributes to various publications like PureWow, Martha Stewart Living, Tasting Table, and NYC GO.

What is Microneedling?

“Microneedling has steadily been gaining traction,” Marisel says.

Indeed, most skin care addicts have not shied away from the intimidating-sounding procedure. (Not even when Kim K showed Instagram her blood-streaked “vampire facial” – a type of microneedling that uses platelet-rich plasma to enhance its healing effects.)

But that’s the scariest version of microneedling. What is a general microneedling procedure like, and what does it do?

“In the office, microneedling uses a mechanized device called a dermapen and it makes thousands of miniscule needle punctures in the outermost layers of the skin,” Marisel explains.

“From these hole punctures, you get a healing response which generates collagen, alleviates acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. “

The price of a microneedling treatment at a doctor’s office? About $1,500. For a lot of us, that’s pretty steep.

Microneedling at Home

At over $1,000 per session, going to a dermatologist or esthetician for microneedling treatment is definitely an investment.

So for those of us who want to know what we’re getting into, you’ll be relieved to know that you can buy a microneedling roller for use at home.

And it’s only $30.

Of course, at-home microneedling rollers are not as effective as what a doctor has in their office. But it does show visible results.

“The results that you get from rolling it a couple times a week across your face… are truly incredible. It improves the performance of your serums,” Marisel says.

“Pairing [a serum] with a microneedle roller… is really the ultimate way to go in terms of making sure that your skin care is maximized.”

Weightlifting for Anti-Aging and Other Fitness Beauty Secrets With Special Guest Tatiana Hoover

When most of us think of lifting weights, we think of bulky guys who drink protein shakes every day and hang out at the gym. Most of us don’t think about the anti-aging benefits of weightlifting.

Personal trainer and weightlifting fanatic Tatiana Hoover joins Just Ask David to make a case for weightlifting for maintaining your youthful looks. “I believe weightlifting is the fountain of youth

Tatiana is a NASM-certified personal trainer and all-around fitness and nutrition guru. She develops healthy recipes for Well and Good and wrote several books. Her writing has been published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Marie Claire, and plenty more. And on top of everything on her plate, she’s a mom of three. Talk about a superwoman.

Why Women Should Lift Weights

Myths about what weightlifting does to women’s bodies have kept plenty of women away from the barbells. Many women assume lifting weights will make them look beefy and overly muscular.

Tatiana is dedicated to dispelling this myth and helping women unlock the power of their own physical strength.

“[Weightlifting] is really my calling, my passion,” Tatiana says. “I feel like that’s what I’m here on Earth to do – convince women that weightlifting is not only going to help them get stronger, but they’re going to feel much more empowered and capable in their daily lives.”

In fact, Tatiana says that women are highly unlikely to get the same muscle gains as men. Why? Testosterone, a hormone most women don’t have much of, is responsible for accumulating big muscle mass.

“This is the number one myth that keeps women from lifting weights. It’s that fear of, ‘Oh, I don’t want to look like a bodybuilder,’” she says. “But if you were to look at me, I don’t look big and bulky, I look tight and toned.” (Also important to add: Tatiana can deadlift 175 lbs!)

Tatiana: “I Believe Weightlifting is the Fountain of Youth”

Of course, being strong is generally good for your health, but Tatiana claims that lifting weights also has cosmetic benefits.

For one, looking youthful has more to do with being age spot- and wrinkle-free. We lose bone mass as we age, and that shows on our faces, too.

“There’s a lot of research on why women should lift weights, especially as they get older,” Tatiana explains. “One of the reasons is to increase and maintain bone density.”

Look younger and reduce the risk of frail bones as you age? Sounds like a win-win.

New Technology: PRP Hair Restoration With Special Guest Dr. John Kahen

Say goodbye to hair plugs and Rogaine!

World-renowned celebrity surgeon Dr. John Kahen has applied the regenerative technology of Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) to hair restoration, and is one of the first to do so. With just a few injections, your natural hair will be growing back in as little as a couple weeks!

Dr. Kahen’s practice Beverly Hills Hair Restoration has access to some of the most advanced hair technology in the world, including SmartPRP®, which was invented by Dr. Kahen himself. He has been featured in Robb Report Best of the Best, Newsweek Top Doctors, ESPN, CNN, CNBC, Marketwatch, BBC, USA Today, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, UK Daily Mail, and Beverly Hills Times Magazine.

How Does SmartPRP Work?

“There are a lot of people battling with hair loss and they’ve just pretty much given up because there’s no one to go to for prevention or a surgical procedure,” Dr. Kahen says.

It’s true. With hair loss comes the frustration and hopelessness of finding a remedy. Hair plugs are expensive and can look unnatural. Hair growth medicine doesn’t always work. Many of us just resign to the fact that our hair is gone forever. But not anymore.

“Things have changed,” Dr. Kahen says. “It’s 2018 and we have new technology.” So how does PRP therapy help grow hair back?

“Platelet-rich plasma has been very successful in restoring miniaturized follicles. Miniaturized follicles are follicles that are going into the thinning phase,” he says. “If someone is going through the thinning phase and I inject this platelet-rich plasma in the scalp, the majority of follicles will actually revive and get restored.”

The best thing about SmartPRP (other than its effectiveness) is that it’s your own natural hair growing out of your scalp! So although the results aren’t instant, they’ll absolutely last.

“The majority of patients see results at least within 2-3 weeks after the procedure,” Dr. Kahen adds. “They will notice the hair color changes – it becomes darker, the follicles become a lot thicker, and they will notice new follicles starting to spread out as well.”

It’s Not Just Male Pattern Baldness

Just because it’s easier for women to cover up thinning hair with a wig or extensions doesn’t mean that women don’t experience hair loss at all. In fact, women make up a significant chunk of hair restoration patients.

SmartPRP is effective for both men and women, who make up “39% of all hair loss” according to Dr. Kahen.

Society’s latest and most popular solution for wrinkles and sagging skin is facial fillers. But for those who aren’t interested in injectables, anti-aging laser treatment is probably for you.

Beauty editor Ani Palen joins Just Ask David to share the inside scoop on laser treatment. Her goal is to help people discover their perfect skin care routine so that they never have to worry about leaving the house without makeup again. Ani has written previously for POPSUGAR, Charlotte’s Book, and other various publications.

Is Laser Treatment for Me?

“If you’re looking for wrinkle [and] fine line repair, laser [treatment] is a great way to go,” Ani says. “Especially if you’re not interested in doing things like Botox or injectables.”

While laser treatment isn’t as invasive as a Botox injection, there is still a recovery time and potential discomfort during healing. “The laser gets down deep, pulverizes (which sounds scary, but it’s not), and resurfaces your skin from the inside out,” Ani adds.

Cost is another factor to consider. You don’t need routine maintenance with laser treatment unless it is recommended for your skin type, but it can still be pretty pricey.”“It is pretty expensive, especially if you have to do a few treatments,” Ani agrees.

Different Types of Laser Treatments

One of the most common anti-aging laser treatments is called Fraxel. There are two different types: dual and repair, the latter which Ani describes as “more invasive.”

“To be blunt, you end up looking a little bit like you got beat up with a meat cleaver for a few days,” she says. “So it’s one of those treatment where you’re going to have to hide inside a little bit.”

Both treatments are good for age and sun spots, fine lines, and scarring. Perfect if you’ve been neglecting your sunscreen for the last few years.

Getting the Most Out of Your Laser Treatment

Unlike injectables, laser treatment is better suited as a long-term fix than a short-term solution. For the best laser treatment results, you need to be taking care of your skin in general.

“If this is the route you’re going to take, you should be taking care of your skin regularly and this isn’t just something you think of as a quick fix,” Ani reiterates. “You should be someone who takes care of their skin everyday, uses antioxidants, [and] uses sunscreen.”

Age is a difficult thing to accept. Especially these days, when people are living longer than ever. Many of us are just as active as we were when we were 25, so it’s hard to see someone in the mirror who looks older than you feel.

New York-based beauty and lifestyle writer Crystal Martin joins Just Ask David to share her best tips on staying young – both in body and soul. Crystal is a regular contributor to The New York Times and she’s also written for Shape and Women’s Wear Daily.

Youthful Skin with NO FILLERS!

As the years go by, so does our collagen. Collagen the protein in our skin most responsible for keeping skin looking fresh and youthful. But our body’s collagen levels will have already diminished by a third once we’ve hit 50.

“One of my favorite products right now is one that even people who are pretty well-versed on things that reverse aging, they’re still not using. And that’s Sculptra,” Crystal shares. “It’s an injectable. People think of it like a filler but they’re not. It doesn’t create an actual physical presence in your skin. …. It essentially preps your skin to produce more collagen.”

Again, these aren’t fillers. So the results aren’t as instant, either. In fact, it takes about three months to see the full results of Sculptra. “The results are very, very natural,” Crystal adds.

Makeup for Mature Skin

We think of hair loss as we get older, but the hair on our heads isn’t the only hair we lose. Our eyebrows and eyelashes may also thin out. Both frame the face, so they can really age you if they look thin.

But Crystal knows a way to make your eyelashes thicker. And all you need is eyeliner.

“Using eyeliner really close to the eye line and putting it in between your eyelashes with a brush… as your skin, your eyes get a little bit more lax [and] heavy. Thick eyeliner exacerbates that problem, so you just want to make it very natural, kind of like an enhancement.”

Crystal also suggests using a lightweight foundation, as heavier foundations tend to settle into our wrinkles and accentuate them.

“Women tend to like foundation and moisturizers that are light. They like the serum foundations, things that just provide just a little bit of coverage in places where they have hyperpigmentation or a bit of redness, otherwise leaving the skin fresh and beautiful,” she says.

And just as important is keeping your skin hydrated to prevent dry, wrinkled skin. “Not just a moisturizer, but something that will draw moisture into your skin… so a toner that has glycerin in it or something that will actually hydrate your skin before you put on your lightweight foundation,” she adds.
