According to Forbes, a new study suggests that the CBD epilepsy medication Epidolex may have serious long-term health risks.

The CBD medication treats the debilitating seizures that come from two rare forms of epilepsy.

Five-year-old Charlotte Figi, one of the first to use Epidolex, went from having 50 seizures every day to having just one nocturnal seizure every three months.

But new CBD research from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences indicates that Epidolex and other CBD products may not be as safe as we once thought.

Researchers found that mice given a proportional dose of the maximum recommended amount of CBD for humans experienced kidney failure.

Before this study, CBD was believed to only have infrequent, mild side effects, like fatigue, diarrhea, and change in appetite.

More Medical CBD Research is Needed

This shocking revelation on medical CBD is just the beginning of new information to come.

CBD research is still a relatively new thing. We’ve still got a lot to learn about it.

From the article:

The findings, which were published earlier this year in the journal Molecules, suggest that while people may be using CBD as a safer alternative to conventional pain relievers, like acetaminophen, the compound may actually be just as harmful to their livers.

CBD has not been legal in the United States for very long. Epidolex has only been approved by the FDA since last year.

But the more researchers are able to learn about CBD, the better we can make informed decisions about our health.

What This Means for CBD

Medicine is much more complex than “bad” and good.”

Epidolex and CBD products have changed lives in a real way.

People who were plagued with incapacitating seizures are now able to live normal lives. Chemotherapy patients are able to maintain their appetites and strength. Chronic pain sufferers can find relief without worrying about addictive prescription drugs.
